What Is HVHZ (High-Velocity Hurricane Zone)?

The short definition

HVHZ stands for High-Velocity Hurricane Zone — a designation in the Florida Building Code that covers Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Inside it, products exposed to wind face the strictest testing, documentation and approval requirements in the state.

It is not a marketing label. It is a code region with its own product-approval process, and a permit inside it is a specific, checkable claim.

What it changes

  • Design wind pressures are calculated to the current code and referenced standard (ASCE 7-22 under FBC 2023)
  • Engineering has to be sealed by a Florida-licensed professional engineer
  • Products are approved for a specific configuration — height, spacing, footing — not in general
  • Installation has to follow those sealed drawings for the approval to mean anything

Wind ratings are per configuration

This is the part that gets misquoted most. A wind rating belongs to a configuration, not to a product name. Taller assemblies see more load, so the same system carries different numbers at different heights.

ecFence is engineered to HVHZ wind standards and permitted in Miami-Dade County — up to 175 MPH at 8 ft, and 115 MPH up to 6 ft. One number quoted for every height is a sign the number is not real.

Outside the zone

If you are not in Miami-Dade or Broward, HVHZ approval is not required — but it is still a useful signal, because it means the engineering was produced and reviewed against the toughest version of the requirement.

The honest limit

No fence is hurricane-proof, and nothing in the code claims otherwise. What HVHZ compliance says is that the loads were calculated, the assembly was engineered, and the drawings were sealed — and that the fence will behave as engineered when it is installed the way the drawings say.
