What Does Metal Fence Gauge Mean?
Gauge measures sheet thickness on an inverted scale — a bigger number means thinner metal. It tells you about heft and dent resistance, and nothing about stiffness or corrosion: panel shape drives stiffness, and the coating drives rust. Compare profile, span, wind rating and coating instead.
The short definition
Gauge is a legacy scale for sheet-metal thickness. Its one confusing property: a higher number means thinner metal. 20 gauge is thinner than 18 gauge, which is thinner than 16. The scale is not metric, not linear, and varies slightly by metal type — which is why specs increasingly quote thickness in inches or millimetres instead.
Those are nominal figures for steel sheet; the point is the direction, not the decimals.
What gauge tells you
- How much metal is in your hand — heft, and how a panel sounds when you knock it
- How easily it dents from a stray ball, a ladder or a lawnmower
- How much material cost sits in the panel
What gauge does not tell you
Stiffness. A panel's resistance to bending comes far more from its shape — ribs, folds, the depth of the profile — than from raw thickness. A well-formed thinner panel routinely outperforms a flat thicker one, which is why comparing two fences on gauge alone is a trap.
It also says nothing about corrosion. Thickness has no bearing on rust; the coating decides that. A thick uncoated panel rusts through faster than a thin properly coated one.
What to ask instead
- Profile — how is the panel formed, and how deep are the ribs?
- Span — what post spacing is it engineered for?
- Wind rating — at what height, sealed by whom?
- Coating — which alloy, at what weight, on how many faces?
Those four answers describe a fence. Gauge on its own describes a sheet of metal.
